A candle is a seemingly simple household item, but it doesn’t have to be just a basic white pillar of melting wax. A candle can inspire, it can brighten up a room (both literally and figuratively), and it can make a house feel like a welcoming home. How? Through the packaging and presentation that makes it an experience rather than just another product on your nightstand or dining room table.

We’ve featured plenty of impressive candle designs on The Dieline, but not as many find a permanent spot in our offices. One that we always make room at our desks for is P.F. Candle Co. The handmade candle and home fragrance goods company features delightful scented pieces with elegant packaging to match.

Nothing about the packaging is extravagant, and yet each item from P.F. Candle Co. feels incredibly special. Amber bottles and brown labels give the products an earthy feel, and for good reason: each fragrance is inspired by travel, the outdoors, and founder Kristen Pumphrey’s own memories. Products take on a uniform look, allowing them to blend together seamlessly throughout the home, and the appearance is neither overtly feminine nor masculine. These are candles, reed diffusers, and room sprays that elicit feelings of warmth and coziness, and you certainly won’t mind leaving out on display for guests to see.

Kristen Pumphrey, a maker and lifelong DIY-er, founded the now LA-based company and now runs it with her husband, Thomas Neuberger. Over the next three weeks, we’ll be diving deeper into how Pumphrey started P.F. Candle Co.—from what tools she has found most valuable as an entrepreneur to how she bootstrapped the business when it got started, from how she’s shared her work to the struggles of being a female business owner, from the biggest challenges to the lessons learned. Stay tuned for next week’s post on how P.F. Candle Co. all got started.
