"The brief was given to Here Design to create a special packaging for an extremely are 50 year old single malt, released to celebrate the work of The Balvenie Malt Master, David Stewart, favoured by whisky connoisseurs around the world. David has dedicated his entire working life to the art of single malt making and is one of the most respected craftsmen in his field. Exactly 50 years to the day that David joined the highland distillery as a seventeen year old apprentice, his incredible devotion is being recognized with the release of a rare cask of The Balvenie single malt distilled in 1962. Just 88 bottles of The Balvenie Fifty will be available, with an RRP of £20,000 per bottle.
"Inspired by David Stewart’s unerring dedication to craftsmanship, we collaborated with Scottish cabinetmaker Sam Chinnery to create a box that symbolises his 50-year endeavour with forty nine layers of beautiful Scottish grown timber and a single layer of brass. Galloway Ash, Borders Oak, Lothian Walnut, Cherry, Yew, Fife Beech, and, fittingly, Banffshire Elm from The Balvenie Distillery site have all been used in the construction of the wooden cylinder. The closing layer of brass, which is engraved with the story of this single malt, echoes the fittings of the distillery’s stills and spirit safes, and hides the secure closing mechanism of the box.
The whisky itself is presented in a hand-blown glass bottle, sealed with a stopper handcrafted by Sam Chinnery, and discreetly labelled with the key dates in the whisky’s production, an individual bottle number and David Stewart’s signature. Underneath each bottle, a heavy brass plate lifts off to reveal a rolled certificate.
The simplicity of the structure belies months of craftsmanship and a keen consideration of the tiniest of details, which is a fitting tribute to David Stewart and the crafts that are still passionately maintained at The Balvenie Distillery."
